(AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for a Fisheries Biologist to support an ongoing acoustic trawl survey within the Fishery Resource Analysis &amp; Monitoring Division of NOAA. Primary Function: The Fisheries Biologist position will support their coastwide Integrated Ecosystem &amp; Pacific Hake Acoustic-Trawl Survey. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of duties in both field and lab settings to support the trawl survey. This will include survey preparation, as well as working at sea in the vessel's wet lab and handling research equipment, all while ensuring adherence to established protocols. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, embracing both the field and lab work while maintaining a keen focus on organization, efficiency, and problem-solving. They will contribute to the overall success of the team by taking initiative and ensuring all project aspects are managed effectively and independently. Duties/Responsibilities: Survey Preparation and Participation: <ul> <li>Complete training to access NWFSC server and prepare for at-sea research deployment.</li> <li>Familiarize with the software and methods for troubleshooting peripheral devices under the guidance of FEAT Newport staff.</li> <li>Set up the wet lab and assist with deploying equipment on research vessels.</li> <li>Deploy on research vessels for extended periods, sometimes working shifts of up to 12 hours.</li> <li>Collect and analyze samples, documenting all efforts through detailed at-sea notes and progress reports.</li> <li>Update and maintain databases, ensuring accurate data tracking.</li> <li>Organize, inventory, and maintain necessary supplies pre-survey and during deployment.</li> <li>Complete post-survey tasks, including analyzing stomach contents, preserving samples, and inventorying gear.</li> <li>Safely operate and drive vehicles, including trucks, and ensure proper handling while backing up and maneuvering in various field settings.</li></ul>Independent Problem Solving and Efficiency: <ul> <li>Work independently and take initiative in moving projects forward.</li> <li>Handle unexpected situations by relying on training, protocols, and guides to work through challenges.</li> <li>Manage tasks efficiently, establishing workflows and timelines.</li> <li>Demonstrate strong organizational skills and a proactive approach to process improvement.</li> <li>Effectively communicate and collaborate with team members to ensure project success.</li></ul>Compensation: Candidates will be offered an hourly rate to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on the candidates depth of experience. Minimum Qualifications: <ul> <li>A solid foundation in scientific method and basic statistical analysis, with 20+ undergraduate-level credits in science-based courses.</li> <li>At least 90 days of at-sea field experience.</li> <li>Proficiency in using dichotomous keys to identify fish and invertebrates.</li> <li>Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word, as well as troubleshooting software/hardware issues.</li> <li>Basic soldering skills and the ability to prepare equipment for wet environments.</li> <li>Completion of an at-sea safety course.</li> <li>Ability to pass a background check, including fingerprinting.</li></ul>Preferred Qualifications: <ul> <li>Over 90 days of at-sea field experience with a focus on determining catch composition and biological sample collection.</li> <li>A completed background check through NOAA or another federal agency within the past four years.</li> <li>In-depth knowledge of Northeast Pacific fishes and experience collecting and analyzing stomach contents.</li> <li>Experience operating a small boat trailer. </li> <li>Familiarity with electronics, including repair and maintenance of systems in wet environments.</li> <li>Experience in managing a variety of roles, including but not limited to laboratory, field, and paperwork, while to new tasks and responsibilities.</li> <li>Strong independence and a self-starting attitude-able to take on tasks and run with them.</li> <li>Experience assisting with project management, including establishing workflows, processes, and timelines, with a focus on continuous improvement and efficiency.</li> <li>Ability to handle unexpected challenges in the field, using training, manuals, and guides to adapt and solve problems.</li> <li>A clear, confident voice for communication, ensuring tasks are completed as needed.</li></ul>Travel: <ul> <li>Travel required - Estimated at 40%</li></ul>Locations/Homeports: <ul> <li>Newport, OR. </li></ul>Contact: If you would like to apply for this exciting new opening, please click the following link <a href="http://aisobservers.com/careers/" target="_blank">http://aisobservers.com/careers/</a> to submit the required information: <ul> <li>Resume</li> <li>Cover letter explaining why you are a good fit for the position</li> <li>3 references (name, email address and phone number)-at least 1 needs to be a professional reference</li></ul>All documents must be submitted for your application to be considered.
