Job Description Job Purpose The Marine Engineer is responsible for the operational maintenance and adaptation of all marine instrumentation at the SMSRC. This role maintenance, and optimization of Marine Operations equipment, including all electronic and mechanical field-research instrumentation, and related hardware. The position ensures that facilities support cutting-edge marine science, comply with safety and environmental standards, and enable impactful research, education, and outreach programs. The role may also involve logistics of research projects and their smooth implementation, and will be instrumental in delivering the SMSRC and UKF mission to become a centre of excellence for marine research and delivering research impact . Key Accountabilities Help operate, manage, adapt and maintain the oceanographic and marine science equipment inventory at the Marine Ops facility. Assist in maintaining the electronics- and mechanical workshop to best-practice standards Be proactive in the writing and maintenance of specific standard operating procedures. Establish and maintain and equipment maintenance register Take part in field operations as field technician when needed Stay up-to-date with all required training Maintain records of up-to-date equipment testing and consumables logistics Liaise with the Dive Safety Officer and senior leadership Be a role model for lab and field safety. This includes adhering to all PPE and other safety requirements Key Interactions Internal • Head of Research Facilities, SMSRC • SMSRC science facilities staff • Academic marine research and operational support staff at SMSRC • UKF students • Academic staff at UKF outside the School of Marine Science • UKF operational staff (communications, partnerships, engagements, finance and procurement) External • Academic and research collaborators • Contractors and logistics providers • Governmental and Intergovernmental agencies and organisations Qualification &amp; Experience • Advanced electronics technician qualifications in marine electronics, robotics, and mechanical engineering or related field; exellent troubleshooting skills, ideally also in telemetry. • Demonstrated experience working in marine and scientific environments using attained qualifications Skills &amp; Competencies Essential: • Strong knowledge of systems integration and electronics troubleshooting, diagnostics, calibration and maintenance in a marine environment. • Commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship • Organizational and project management skills • Good communication skills • Analytical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making abilities Desirable: • Seagoing experience and familiarity with vessel operations and safety certifications. • Experience in academic, or government research environments. • Diving Qualifications • Flexibility and adaptability • Collaborative and interdisciplinary mindset • Proficiency in risk management • First Aid and related certifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities <ul><li>Plan and supervise surveying operations;</li><li>Select, utilize, and calibrate appropriate surveying equipment for marine construction, hydrographic surveys, nautical charts, and maps;</li><li>Select and manage survey boat, software and hardware for the project site;</li><li>Provide accurate reports, manage data and answer technical queries for marine construction activities such as dredging, coastal work, pipelines and environmental monitoring, and other structural construction activities;</li><li>Collect information about the type of seabed along with the movement of water and waves and the delineation of high water and low water line;</li><li>Generate contour maps and other graphical models;</li><li>Validate data, convert data into charts, profiles, and other graphical methods using AutoCAD and other modeling software.</li><li>Assure the project documentation is correct, complete, neat, and consistent with the company's policies and procedures;</li><li>Interact with project personnel, including contractors, project managers, engineers and clients and assist in cultivating an integrated team approach through open lines of communications and participation in work progress meetings;</li><li>Prepare and oversee subordinates' final reports, work plans, health and safety documents, and the assembly of report appendices;</li><li>Interpret and apply technical specifications, construction drawings, and work plans and determine appropriate action to implement plan requirements;</li><li>Identify, prepare, and distribute field change requests and request change orders for review and approval by Project Manager or Engineer;</li><li>Identify project staffing requirements and prepare and maintain on-site personnel schedules to meet project deadlines;</li><li>Address and resolve on-site work problems, as well as client, contractor/subcontractor and employee problems quickly and effectively;</li><li>Ensure compliance with project specifications and abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the site-specific health and safety plans (HASP) and the company's Environmental Health &amp; Safety Management policies and procedures;</li><li>Oversee the site-specific health and safety plan activities of the subcontractors or other surveyors; Direct tailgate health and safety meetings in accordance with established policies and procedures;</li><li>Manage and abide by the project budget and provide notification of anticipated costs and potential overruns to Project Managers and/or Engineers; and</li><li>Perform related work as required.</li></ul>Education and Licensure <ul><li>Bachelor's degree in surveying, construction management,civil engineering, geology, marine sciences, or related subjects (required)</li><li>Advanced degree in surveying, construction management,civil engineering, geology, marine sciences, or related subjects (preferred)</li></ul>Skills, Experience and Qualifications <ul><li>At least 5 years of applicable experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the responsibilities of the position. (required)</li><li>Strong oral and technical writing skills. (required)</li><li>Experience using marine, structural, and geotechnical survey equipment such as a total station, prism pole, echo sounders, multibeam, etc. (preferred)</li><li>Experience with design and modeling software such as AutoCAD, Qinsy, Terramodel, Hypack, Wintopo.
