Through integration with other expertise in urban and natural catchments, we work with a range of stakeholders to help clients and communities to develop solutions that deliver environmental performance sustainably and efficiently.This is a great opportunity for an experienced and imaginative water quality modeller to join an ambitious expert team in a role that will provide plenty of scope for technical development and career progression in the coming years through existing contracts and client relationships both in the UK and overseas. You will work within a core of scientific and engineering experts, supporting a range of clients from the water sector, primarily, but also the energy and infrastructure sectors. Together, we will identify pollution sources, pathways, and impacts on sensitive receptors and develop both engineered and nature-based solutions. The role encompasses scoping, data collection, development, execution, and presentation of multi-dimensional environmental water quality models. These models simulate the behaviour of reservoirs, lakes (Loughs and Lochs), as well as transitional and coastal waters. About You You should possess a degree in physics, mathematics, or engineering. Ideally, you will have experience in consultancy and/or the water industry and either have attained or be working towards chartered membership in a relevant professional institution. As an experienced professional, you are expected to work independently and with minimal supervision, with extensive relevant experience that includes the following: <ul> <li>A good understanding of numerical modelling equations and discretisation, 2D mesh generation</li> <li>Experience using numerical modelling software such as MIKE, Delft3D, OpenFOAM, ADCIRC, and Telemac, with proven applications in relevant fields. This experience might include modelling hydrodynamics, multiphase flows, particle tracking, advection dispersion, water quality, and chemical processes. Ideally, you will also have a basic understanding of physico-chemical water quality and the associated regulatory standards for fresh and/or marine waters.</li> <li>Experience with Linux,scripting languages such as Python/R,MIKE ECO-lab would also be an advantage.</li> <li>Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience to liaise with a broad range of stakeholders where you will be working closely with clients, and other professional staff across multi-disciplinary business groups.</li> </ul>We are proud of our culture. Position Summary Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, the Coastal Ecologist will lead research projects and provide oversight for the daily function of lab and field research activities. The candidate will oversee procedures and protocols, lead planning and implementation of field and laboratory experiments, supervise sample processing, provide lab organization including inventory and ordering of supplies, lead the lab group in data management and statistical analysis, and conduct report writing. The candidate will arrange and schedule field work and manage student and volunteer contributions to lab and field work. They will manage chemical inventory and safety training and documentation in the lab. Position Information Research Support <ul> <li>Prepare detailed plans for study for research projects. Ability to reason logically and capacity for independent and creative thinking on research problems; ability to develop techniques for handling a large variety of detailed data and ability to analyze these data; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; ability to speak and write effectively; ability to analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action. Experience: Three years of progressively responsible technical research or statistical experience including or supplemented by one year in the interpretation and graphic presentation of data. Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. (Additional qualifying professional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.) Preferred Qualifications <ul> <li>Graduate degree in ecology, marine biology, or related field.</li> <li>Experience in field techniques for intertidal and subtidal ecological studies including experience in San Francisco Bay.</li> <li>At least 4 years of research experience.</li> <li>Strong ability in data visualization and statistical analysis. </li> <li>Experience working with and providing research training for undergraduates and graduate students.</li> <li>Prior experience as a lab manager for a research laboratory.</li> </ul>Environmental/Physical/Special CA Boating certification and advanced open water SCUBA. Able to work outdoors in wet and muddy conditions, able to lift 50 pounds, some work required on weekends and early mornings according to tide levels with schedule adjusted accordingly.
