Join a team that has the environment down to a science. Your Opportunity We are actively seeking a talented Senior Aquatic Biologist to join our aquatics team. The successful candidate could work from any of our British Columbia or Yukon office (Burnaby, Sidney, Victoria, Terrace, Quesnel, Prince George, or Whitehorse), but would ideally be in the Lower Mainland and work two to five days per week in our Burnaby, BC office (potentially negotiable). The successful candidate will work in a team environment and contribute to environmental impact assessments, environmental effects mitigation and monitoring programs, research projects, and permitting under the Fisheries Act and the Water Sustainability Act. Depending on level of expertise, tasks may include conducting or planning field work, data analysis, report and proposal writing and reviewing, preparing and delivering presentations, and business development. The successful candidate will help shape our freshwater practice in BC and beyond, supporting projects in the mining, energy, transportation, and community development sectors. Your Key Responsibilities <ul> <li>Manage, plan, and lead field programs (e.g., fish distribution, health, and abundance; lake, river, and stream habitat assessment; water and sediment quality)</li> <li>Prepare complex assessment and permitting documents (e.g., Fisheries Act authorization applications, Water Sustainability Act Change Approvals, Waste Discharge Authorization applications, Environmental/Impact Assessment technical chapters)</li> <li>Contribute leadership to the group by providing supervision, training, technical direction, and mentoring to junior and intermediate staff</li> <li>Assemble, manage, and analyze large datasets</li> <li>Manage tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work, and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budget</li> <li>Lead the pursuit of new business development opportunities by preparing proposals and building and maintaining positive client relationships</li> <li>Understand recent and existing practices and techniques for sampling and analysis of data from marine intertidal, subtidal and pelagic environments</li> <li>Embrace and promote Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work</li> <li>Participate in Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work</li> <li>A people leadership (i.e., Team Lead) position may be available based on interest and qualifications, but is not a requirement for this position.</li> </ul>Qualifications Your Capabilities and Credentials <ul> <li>Proven technical, communication, writing and organization skills</li> <li>Familiarity with freshwater ecology and knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirement</li> <li>Required experience in: <ul> <li>Working in a collaborative team environment</li> <li>Developing field programs and methods to meet specific project objectives</li> <li>Preparing Fisheries Act authorization applications with offsetting plans</li> <li>Preparing environmental/impact assessment technical chapters federally and provincially, preferably in British Columbia</li> <li>Leading field crews in the execution of field programs including developing health and safety protocols and developing custom field methods when required</li> <li>Collecting, managing, and analyzing data (statistical experience is preferred)</li> <li>Leading the preparation of complex, high-consequence technical reports, possibly multi-disciplinary</li> <li>Leading and contributing to proposals of varying sizes</li> <li>Business development through client relationships and/or technical expertise</li> <li>Leading junior and intermediate staff in data management and report preparation</li> </ul></li> <li>Experience in any of the following is an asset: <ul> <li>Developing habitat offset and restoration plans</li> <li>Assessing fish distribution, abundance, and health using desktop, field, and laboratory data</li> <li>Construction monitoring and environmental management planning, including fish salvage, underwater noise, and erosion and sediment control</li> <li>Developing field study protocols for and deploying remote operated vehicles or drones</li> <li>Working closely with hydrologists and hydraulic modellers</li> </ul></li> </ul>Education and Experience <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree in Biology is required and a M.Sc. or PhD in Biology is preferred.</li> <li>Current Registered Professional Biologist accreditation with the College of Applied Biology is required.</li> <li>Minimum of 10 years of experience as an aquatic biologist, 15 or more years preferred, with experience in freshwater ecosystems in British Columbia.</li> <li>Consulting experience is required.</li> </ul>Other types of safety training are assets: Intermediate First Aid and Transportation Endorsement certificate, UTV training, Electrofishing Crew Lead certificate.
