R/V Sikuliaq, pronounced [see-KOO-lee-auk], is a 261-foot oceanographic research ship capable of bringing scientists to the ice-choked waters of Alaska and the polar regions. We are currently accepting applications for licensed temporary marine engineering positions including 2nd Assistant Engineer, and 3rd Assistant Engineer. These temporary relief positions will fill in while the permanent crew are on shore, and applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis. Candidates should possess basic operational understanding and experience working with shipboard systems, fuel oil bunkering procedures &amp; emergency response, an understanding of shipboard electrical systems, basic machine &amp; hand tool safe use and basic math &amp; computer skills. Strong mechanical problem solving skills are essential to succeed in this role. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must possess the following: a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Credential endorsed as [Third or Second] Assistant Engineer. Officer in charge of an engineering watch (OICEW), rating forming part of an engineering watch (RFPNW), Able Seafarer-engine, Basic Training, PSC, Advanced Firefighting, Medical First Aid Provider, VPDSD, and Security Awareness endorsements are also required. The temporary QMEDs will fill in while the regular crew are on shore, and applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis. Strong mechanical problem solving skills and the ability to be at sea for extended periods of time are required. Operational understanding of fuel oil bunkering procedures and emergency response, safe usage of basic machine and hand tools, basic math and computer skills. Knowledge of basic good seamanship practices (knots, line-handling, general shipboard maintenance and care, preparation/preservation of steel surfaces, operation of deck equipment, winches, etc). Ability to work with a diverse group of people including scientists, ship's crew and technicians. Candidates should have experience working in the engine room of a ship, experience with a wide range of vessel systems and their proper operation, and experience with and practice of good safety procedures. Strong mechanical and problem solving skills are a must! About You: This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody Hornblower's RESPECT Service System. About the Opportunity: The successful Engineer will be a hands-on team member at all levels of the Engineering department's scope. Responsible for all aspects and phases of engineering projects from start to finish. Includes formulating likely hypothesis, controlling variables, designing tests, gathering data, recommending options, and seeing it through to the end. Expected to show leadership within the department and demonstrate a calm and positive reaction to all engineering challenges.
