Due to continued expansion, we are seeking a qualified Vessel Skipper to support our growing hydrographic and geophysical survey operations What You'll Be Doing <ul><li>Conduct Hydrographic Surveys: Plan and execute high-resolution hydrographic surveys across diverse environments, including inland waterways, coastal regions, and offshore sites.</li><li>Operate Advanced Survey Equipment: Utilise and maintain sophisticated survey instruments such as multibeam and single-beam echo sounders, side-scan sonar, magnetometers, and GNSS systems to collect accurate data.</li><li>Data Processing and Analysis: Process and analyse collected hydrographic data using industry-standard software, ensuring the production of precise and reliable survey results.</li><li>Report Preparation: Generate comprehensive survey reports, charts, and visualizations that meet client specifications and adhere to international standards.</li><li>Quality Assurance: Implement and adhere to robust QA procedures to ensure the accuracy and integrity of survey data throughout all project phases. </li><li>Project Management: Assist in the planning and coordination of survey projects, including resource allocation, scheduling, and liaising with clients to meet project objectives.</li><li>Team Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers and environmental scientists, to integrate hydrographic data into broader project frameworks.</li><li>Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all survey equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and ready for deployment to guarantee optimal performance during field operations.</li><li>Health and Safety Compliance: Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations, promoting a culture of safety within the survey team.</li><li>Continuous Improvement: Stay abreast of technological advancements in hydrographic surveying and contribute to the continuous improvement of survey methodologies and practices.</li></ul>Essential Criteria: <ul><li>Relevant Education: Degree or equivalent qualification in Hydrography, Geomatics, Marine Science, or a related discipline. Recent graduates with relevant training are welcome to apply.</li><li>Software Familiarity: Basic understanding or experience with hydrographic acquisition and processing software such as QPS QINSy, Qimera, Hypack, EIVA NaviSuite, or SonarWiz.</li><li>Survey Techniques: Exposure to or working knowledge of data acquisition and processing for multibeam and singlebeam bathymetry. Experience with side-scan sonar, magnetometers, or LiDAR is an advantage.</li><li>CAD/GIS Skills: Basic skills in CAD and/or GIS software (e.g., AutoCAD, QGIS, ArcGIS).</li><li>Hands-On Experience: Some practical industry experience (e.g., through work placement, internships, or previous roles) in hydrographic or geophysical surveying.</li><li>Positive Attitude: Enthusiastic with a willingness to learn new techniques and take initiative in field and office tasks.</li><li>Driving Licence: Full UK driving licence is essential. </li><li>Travel Flexibility: Willing and able to travel and stay away from home for site work, sometimes at short notice.</li><li>Boat Work: Comfortable working aboard survey vessels. RYA Powerboat Level 2 or willingness to obtain is advantageous.</li><li>Team Player: Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.</li></ul>Candidates must live within (or be willing to relocate to) a commutable distance of the company's head office in Irvine. Your new role As a Senior Marine Ecologist, you will lead and deliver technical marine ecology inputs across a range of major infrastructure and development projects, including offshore wind, interconnectors / subsea cables, ports and harbours, and coastal developments. You will play a key role in writing and reviewing environmental assessments, developing project specific mitigation measures and enhancement measures for the marine environments, engaging with regulators, and developing the expertise within the marine ecology team. Your key responsibilities will be: <ul><li>Lead and author technical chapters for EcIAs, HRA, WFD, and MCZ assessments.</li><li>Prepare and review supporting information for marine licence / voluntary notifications / EPS licence applications.</li><li>Design, review, and undertake marine ecological surveys (including intertidal phase I and II habitat surveys).</li><li>Write and review ecological baselines for benthic ecology, fish and shellfish, and marine mammals.</li><li>Input to impact assessments for a range of marine ecological receptors.</li><li>Collaborate with other disciplines such as acoustics and coastal processes to develop approaches to modelling impact pathways to marine habitats and species.</li><li>Develop and implement marine ecological mitigation and enhancement strategies.</li><li>Experience in Development Consent Order (DCO) applications and Examination processes.</li><li>Undertake multivariate statistical analysis using PRIMER (e.g. benthic community analysis).</li><li>Conduct fish spawning habitat assessments for key species such as herring and sandeel.</li><li>Some understanding of assessing underwater noise effects (and other impacts pathways such as EMF) on marine ecological receptors.</li><li>Support stakeholder engagement, including regulators, NGOs, and clients.</li><li>Experience in Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) (using the Defra Statutory Metric), Marine Net Gain (MNG), and blue carbon habitats (e.g., kelp beds, seagrass, saltmarsh, and maerl beds).</li><li>Deliver training material and support the upskilling of the expanding marine ecology team.</li></ul>Your new team As a marine ecologist you will be part of our UK Biodiversity and Ecosystems service line but will also collaborate closely with the marine EIA team, which forms part of our wider Global Impact Assessment business. Our UK business employs over 300 environmental science professionals in 14 locations and covers a breadth of consulting services structured around impact assessment, compliance, strategy and transactions, ecology and biodiversity, new initiatives and sustainability, product safety and stewardship, contaminated land, and water.
