Our Naval Architecture capability is currently expanding, and we have a position for a Naval Architect (structures) / Structural Engineer with 2+ years' experience of ship and/or submarine structural design and analysis, to enhance our existing team. We are looking for candidates that are keen to develop their career in structural design and analysis, with a focus on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and rule-based design, but also broader aspects of business development and project management in this client facing role, with a view to underpinning the core of the team. Our team also actively supports the UK's in-service submarines, the development of warship concept designs for overseas clients and through-life support for both ships and submarines. Our Engineering Consultancy workflow supports technology development through advanced structural analysis, for example ultimate strength of damaged ship structures and fatigue strength assessment by FEA. About You You will undertake and progress to lead structural analysis and design work, including the application of FEA techniques, on a wide range of ship and submarine design and in-service support projects. You will have: <ul><li>A degree, or equivalent, in Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture or related disciplines;</li><li>Experience in analysis from first principles and assessment of structure to rules (e.g. Lloyd's Register Rules and Regulations and/or British Standards);</li><li>Good interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to communicate directly within project teams and with our clients;</li><li>Experience in linear and non-linear analysis of structures using Finite Element modelling techniques (ANSYS preferred but not essential) and/or experience in dynamic analysis and assessment of shock scenarios would be beneficial;</li><li>Experience of undertaking FEA of equipment foundations and/or experience of undertaking structural design and analysis would be beneficial;</li><li>Membership of a recognised professional body, working towards Chartered Engineer status would be beneficial; and</li><li>A background in naval surface ship and/or submarine structures is preferred but applicants with a good track record in structural analysis from other industries will be considered.</li></ul>Missing skills? Job Requirements Job Summary: Quest Global are responsible for the design, specification and control of gas turbine projects in the UK and worldwide. This vacancy is for a consultant Naval Architect to develop a strategy to certify a warship powerplant in accordance with Lloyds Register Naval Ship Rules (NSR) 2020. The role is to define the Lloyds Register requirements, and to specify when, how and by whom the Lloyds Register Naval Shop Rules should be engaged. There will be a series of requirement definition and compliance activities, to ensure that the gas turbine powerplant installation in the warship complies to the Lloyds Register standards. The vacancy is a 12-month Outside IR35 contract located in Bristol, UK. Due to the UK Defence content, the work must be completed 100% in-office. Roles and Responsibilities <ul><li>To Identify and review the Inspection and Test Plans for the powerplant</li><li>Compile Lloyds Strategy Document based on an existing previous strategy</li><li>Define communication channels for Lloyds Certification to OEM's Build Lines, Purchasing, Design Approval Documentation</li><li>Plan and lead activities to certify powerplant programmes against the relevant Lloyds Register requirements</li><li>Define and optimise certification strategies with the relevant stakeholders, including the OEM's suppliers, customers, and the Lloyds Register offices</li><li>Assess new and existing substantiation created by the OEM with a view to obtaining Drawing Approval Documents (DAD) for all programme design data</li><li>Liaise directly with Lloyds Register to ensure a plan is mutually agreed and followed through to design certification.</li><li>Facilitate the definition and agreement of Inspection &amp; Test Plans (ITP) between the suppliers and the applicable in-country representation of Lloyds Register</li><li>Actively identify and explore opportunities to minimise the effort required to achieve certification whilst maintaining full compliance</li><li>Identify and escalate risks associated with possible non-compliances, costs overruns, and/or non-adherence to timescales associated with certification</li><li>Provide feedback to the customer for continuous improvement</li></ul>Work Experience Required Skills (Technical Competencies): Excellent understanding of Lloyds Register Naval Ship Rules (NSR) 2020, as applied to warships and their powerplants. Good understanding of technical databases and design documentation, including technical drawings. This includes data manipulation in complex databases, writing technical reports and creation of drawings. Good understanding of the requirements for export control and intellectual property control when transferring design data across company and geographical boundaries. Candidates are required to be computer literate in MS Office applications e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Internet browsers. MS Teams experience would also be useful. Desired Characteristics <ul><li>Familiarity with the working processes of gas turbine engines </li><li>Familiarity with after-market maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) processes. </li><li>Demonstrated ability to analyse and resolve problems</li><li>Ability to document and plan</li></ul>Appreciation of engine development testing and the certification process together with safety considerations, and/or previous experience in the aerospace or engineering industry or previous experience of engine, unit or component testing or instrumentation would be beneficial. SC-level Security Clearance would be advantageous for a quick start but is not essential for the role. Enhanced BPSS background checks will be carried out for the successful candidate, who must be resident in the UK on application for this role.
