About the role Marine vessels represent some of the most complex manufactured assets in the world and as such provide interesting, challenging and rewarding work for the people that design, build and support them through life. As an Engineer within our Marine Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in projects across the lifecycle of various types of vessels but most notably, specialised, light weight and high-speed vessels for both our UK and international customers; this role is primarily in support of our Commercial Shipping Capability. You will be involved in solving engineering challenges through leading the development and delivery of the Marine Engineering aspects of our projects. The projects will range from supporting our customers in procuring and designing new ships to delivering complex in-service changes for both commercial and naval vessels, through to the delivery of feasibility studies, technical engineering investigations and analyses. More specifically you may expect to get experience of undertaking: • System design and equipment selection development and integration using 2D and 3D modelling; • Surveys to support design changes and investigations; • Engineering investigations to resolve in-service defects and safety issues; • Project Management of engineering tasks and projects; • Engaging with the wider industry; You will have opportunity to influence designs and team processes to improve designs, build quality and efficiency. Your day-to-day work will include design of mechanical systems and arrangements with supporting calculations, supporting the review of production engineering 3D models, inter-departmental communication and liaising with suppliers, partners and clients to develop design solutions. You will also have an opportunity to contribute to the delivery of projects across our wider portfolio, including submarines and a range of broader consulting projects within our other market areas. Research and development is also at the heart of what we do and you will have the opportunity to support; enhancing global understanding of ship issues, the development of future ship design concepts as well as the development of new capabilities, tools and processes. This role is based out of our Fareham office where the majority of people within the Capability are based in the However, the capability is part of the UK and Europe region so a balance of in-office, remote and hybrid working will be considered. Travel to other BMT offices (we also have offices in Glasgow, Plymouth, Bristol and Bath) and customer sites will be necessary as and when required (occasional overseas travel may be required). About you Candidates will have an HNC/HND and/or a Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline i.e. Mechanical or Marine Engineering. You will ideally be professional qualified (registered as a Chartered Engineer with an appropriate professional body or Incorporated supported by domain experience) or demonstrate you are on the path for registration. You'll be commercially aware, ensuring that works are being carried out and completed to an appropriate standard and level of detail. You will be able to produce clear and well-presented drawings and calculations to a high quality. A high degree of initiative and autonomy is essential for this rewarding role, to meet agreed targets and deliverable deadlines. You will have good interpersonal skills with experience of communicating your work to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner through meetings, written reports and/or presentations. The following skills are considered essential: • You will have a with a minimum of three years relevant design experience in the marine commercial industry for vessels in the range 15 - 70m+. • An understanding of the issues pertaining to the integration of ship systems and equipment within ships or marine platforms; • Ability to produce mechanical ship system schematics (in AutoCAD), ship and technical specifications, vessel arrangements and have experience in different construction materials and techniques, the ability to optimise designs for buildability, weight reduction, and have worked with multiple classification / code regulations; • You will be proficient in AutoCAD 2D, and will, ideally have skills in 3D CAD software. You will also be proficient in Microsoft programmes; • Good analytical and problem-solving skills with experience of leading technical projects to time, cost and quality through excellent organisational skills despite competing priorities. The following skills are desirable: • Defence domain experience; • Ability to coach and mentor less experienced staff; • Ability to receive and give feedback; • Is flexible and can be deployed on a range of projects and customer sites due to breadth of Flexibility to be deployed on a range of projects and customer sites. • Experience of PLM software or document management processes. We are looking for innovative and inspiring individuals who have the passion and drive to join our forward-thinking Commercial Team. You will have the opportunity to make a valuable contribution towards a wide variety of projects and enquiries, spanning the full breadth of our portfolio including; Crew Transfer Vessels, Service Operations Vessels, ferries, patrol boats, workboats and landing craft amongst many others. The work ranges from concept design, initial enquiry assessments and tender bids, to detailed project naval architecture through the Class, Production and Build phase of vessels that will operate in the offshore energy, government/security, workboat and ferry sectors, around the world. The role will require you to lead multi-disciplinary teams to develop a suitable hull form, undertake lightship weight analysis for vessel structure, systems and outfit, determine the required propulsion system to meet the operational requirements using a combination of model test data and CFD methods, work with other team members to develop 3D render images to support tender submissions, carry out seakeeping assessments through model testing and analytically, undertake intact and damage stability assessment, develop global structural arrangements and much more. You will also have the opportunity to take on responsibility for interfacing with our clients and potential clients on their technical design requirements through technically leading the work in one of our sectors. You will also interface internally with our sales team for future opportunities, programmes team on project delivery and our chief engineer to ensure the technical quality of our outputs. In addition to this, you will be able to develop yourself through extensive training opportunities both technical and soft skills as well as ensuring our designs are at the forefront of technology utilising our significant annual research and development budgets. The role is nominally based at our Southampton office (the office location is planned to be moving to Whiteley in Quarter 2 2025) working 3 days in office however, we will consider applicants who wish a more flexible and hybrid working arrangement. While the role is nominally full time, we will also consider applicants who wish to work part time. About You You will have a Bachelor's or Master's level degree in Naval Architecture with a minimum of five years relevant experience in the marine industry. Greater experience is required for the more senior roles. Leading a team of Naval Architects, you will have a strong background in Naval Architecture principles, with the experience to apply these principles in a practical and dynamic way within a design environment. Experience with relevant codes of practice and Classification Society rules and practical experience in vessel construction is desirable. You will be competent in fundamental Naval Architecture tasks such as hull design, stability calculation, weight calculation, performance prediction, model testing, seakeeping analysis, tank plan development and arrangement drawings. Experience of one or more types of vessel that BMT designs is desirable which includes Crew Transfer Vessels, Service Operations Vessels, ferries, patrol boats, workboats etc. covering diverse hull form types ranging from slow &amp; high-speed catamarans, deep-v planning monohulls, extreme semi-SWATHs, SWATHSs, SES, Pentamaran and many more. Ideally you will possess advanced level skills in 2D/3D CAD (AutoCAD), and other specialist software skills such as with Maxsurf would be an advantage in order to produce and review design information. You'll be commercially aware, ensuring that works are being carried out and completed to an appropriate standard and level of detail. You will produce clear and well-presented drawings and plans to a suitable quality and standard. A high degree of initiative and self-drive is essential for this rewarding role, ensuring that agreed targets and deliverable deadlines can be met. You will have experience in Project Management and in the supervision and management of project teams. Experience in guiding and supporting colleagues, including checking that work is in accordance with the appropriate standards.
