Job Description: <ul><li>SEA 21, NAVSEA's Director of Surface Ship Maintenance, Modernization, and Sustainment is seeking professional support services (PSS) to support the Government's existing organization, personnel, knowledge, and processes.</li><li>SEA 21 integrates sustainment and maintenance strategies, modernization plans, training needs, and technical, logistics, and programmatic efforts to best manage the lifecycle of U.S. and partner Navy surface ships and systems from fleet introduction through transfer or disposal.</li><li>SEA 21 is the dedicated life cycle management organization for the Navy's in-service surface ships and is responsible for managing critical modernization, maintenance, training, and inactivation programs.</li><li>SEA 21 provides wholeness to the fleet by serving as the primary technical interface, ensuring surface ships are modernized with the latest technologies and remain mission relevant throughout each ship's service life. The organization also maintains inactive ships for future disposal, donation, or transfer, to include follow-on technical support to our partner navies.</li></ul>Duties include: <ul><li>A naval architect designs, builds and maintains boats and ships.</li><li>These vessels can range widely in size from small combatant craft to large aircraft carriers.</li><li>Naval architects are also responsible for designing submarines that range in size from small unmanned undersea vehicles to large ballistic missile carrying submarines.</li><li>The follow are the primary phases of a ship design that naval architects are required to be proficient in: hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, flotation and stability, structures, arrangements, and construction.</li><li>For U.S. Navy ship designs naval architects are required to be proficient with conducting cost and survivability assessments.</li><li>Naval architects need to be proficient with modern computation tools to perform ship and submarine design studies.</li><li>Due to the complexity of modern naval ships and craft, naval architects are required to integrate the activities of a variety of technology specialists.</li><li>Naval architects are required to synthesize the often conflicting demands from competing design constraints to determine the most balanced designs for a ship or submarine.</li></ul>Required Skills and Experiences: Required: <ul><li>Minimum of 5 years professional experience related to labor category</li></ul>Preferred: <ul><li>7 years professional experience related to labor category.</li><li> Experience supporting a DoD component</li></ul>Degree Requirements: Required: <ul><li>Bachelor's degree in marine engineering, naval architecture, or related field</li></ul>Preferred: <ul><li>Master's degree in marine engineering, naval architecture, or related field</li><li>Professional engineer's license.</li></ul><ul><li>Must be a U.S. citizen</li><li>A secret security clearance. </li></ul>All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran. Job Summary The Marine Repair Mechanic is a skilled manufacturing position that is responsible for the repair of aluminum and fiberglass boats for the USCG and Navy, as well as other government and commercial customers. This is position is responsible for ensuring that all technical parts are correctly installed and comply with the regulatory specs to successfully support the continued use of the boat. Responsibilities <ul><li>Install, maintain and trouble shoot advanced 12 volt/110 electrical systems. The ability to apply that knowledge to existing electrical circuitry as well as install new, complete systems.</li><li>Installation and service of electrical components found on board small patrol craft and work boats - including lighting, electronics, pumps, wash down systems, etc.</li><li>Ability to understand electrical schematics, fabricate and install wiring harnesses to ABYC Standards.</li><li>Installation and service of hydraulic steering systems and controls, including installation of hydraulic systems and pumps for various onboard vessel features.</li><li>Ability to layout and install hardware from bow to stern on new blank hulls and superstructures to include all equipment and systems found on small craft under 40 feet.</li><li>The ability to read and/or create accurate wiring schematics and to diagnose and repair problems in existing systems.</li><li>Install, maintain and trouble shoot mechanical drive systems.</li><li>Install, maintain and trouble shoot marine specific components.</li><li>Assemble, install, maintain, and repair various mechanical systems such as diesel engines to drivelines, hydraulic systems and lighting.</li><li>Service and repair various systems such as propulsion machinery, propellers, rudders, cargo handling machinery, lifeboat davits, and anchor handling gear.</li><li>Follow an installation diagram including various measurements, torques and other values/calculations.</li><li>Analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout, assembly, repair, and operations.</li><li>Maintains all safety standards.</li><li>Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits.</li><li>Operates a wide variety of handheld and power-assisted tools and production fixtures.</li><li>Ensures quality and accuracy of their work.</li><li>Reports issues to supervisor or to team lead and works on troubleshooting and identifying failures and potential failures.</li><li>Responsible for assessing conditions of the boat and its components as well as conducting operational testing and quality inspections.</li><li>Positions and secures parts, using hoist, crane, wire and banding machine, or hand tools.</li><li>Transports boat using company provided vehicle to pick up and deliver boats to and from client locations around the continental US.</li><li>Must be able to launch and recover boats for testing and evaluation.</li><li>Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.</li></ul>Required Skills &amp; Abilities <ul><li>Ability to show strong attention to detail and accuracy.</li><li>Knowledge in standard build practices in comparable manufacturing environments</li><li>Strong mechanical background and familiarity in a wide variety of tools used in the assembly process and apply them safely to complete installations.</li><li>Follows directions and procedures under supervision</li><li>Effectively communicate to supervisor and manager</li><li>Adheres to all procedures and safe work practices</li><li>Mathematics - Using mathematics to solve problems.</li><li>Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.</li><li>Time Management</li><li>Critical Thinking</li><li>Aluminum welding skills are beneficial, but not required</li></ul>Qualifications <ul><li>High School Degree, GED or equivalent required</li><li>Applicants with prior technician experience in the maritime industry preferred</li><li>Applicants with certificate or degree in Marine Technician, Automotive Technician, or Industrial Maintenance Technician or equivalent experience preferred</li><li>Must be able to pass a background check.</li><li>Must be able to pass drug and alcohol screens.</li><li>Ability to obtain a driver's license and have a clean driving record.</li><li>Ability to operate a boat and trailer towing skills.</li><li>Ability to obtain a state boat operators license.</li><li>Ability to obtain a passport.</li></ul>Physical requirements Position requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, crawling, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Must be able to work in tight spaces and awkward positions for long periods of time. Must be able to conduct inside and outside work in all temperatures. Use of manufacturing equipment. Work in areas at times that are not environmentally controlled. Able to move/lift/pull/push 50 lbs. Ability to get underway with high-speed watercraft in variable weather conditions. Must be able to obtain a driver license with trailer use. Must be able to travel as required, with travel occurring up to 25% of the time, including travel outside of the Continental United States.
