Hornblower is seeking a Marine Engineer for our Seaward Services operation in Norfolk, Virginia.

About the Opportunity:

The Marine Engineer leads a team of vessel mechanics, in support of CTV operations. The position requires highly developed technical and organizational skills. Fundamental to the task are the tracking, monitoring and documenting maintenance issues within the required reporting scheme and ensuring that all periodic checks, inspections, and maintenance are carried out on schedule. This person must manage the activities of on-board mechanics, and ensure the mission is realized. This role will include a combination of shore work, as well as time spent riding vessels and/or traveling to remote operational hubs. This role will require travel up to 25% of the time, and time riding vessels, up to 30% of the time.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Supervises, mentors, and otherwise manages activities and performance of Mechanics, and maintenance personnel. Ensures daily, weekly, monthly, and other periodic preventative maintenance is completed on time and accurately. Ensures safe and clean engine rooms and work areas. Manages, maintains, and operates non-mechanical, as well as mechanical systems of the vessel or vessels within legal requirements and the constraints of the SMS. Establishes, implements, and maintains task lists and inspection checklists. Ensures that the discharged sewage and oily water are in accordance with all regulations.
  • Responsible for compilation, review and maintenance of systems and maintenance logs. Ensures that Planned Maintenance Program is informed, maintained, and followed by all personnel to include on-board engineers.
  • Supports safety drills, procedures, and provides technical assistance and instruction to crewmembers in keeping with SMS.
  • Prepares parts specifications, locates distributors or vendors for custodial supplies, paint, equipment, and tools; maintains inventories onboard and on shore, needed for operation of mechanical, and non-mechanical systems. Prepare specifications and or work orders for maintenance and repair items necessary to maintain the vessel and bring them into regulatory compliance.
  • Supervise industrial support work, and ensure the work is in line with the specifications and of good quality. Ensures that all spending is approved, conscientious, careful, focused, and that appropriate Purchase Requisitions are developed for all requirements.
  • Defers to, and act in support of "the vessel" in the event or a real or simulated emergency. Engages in hands-on repairs and improvements projects as workload and criticality requires. Inspects safety equipment to verify that location, condition, and markings are following the company's requirements; assists in annual inspections of safety equipment, and enforces safety, as well as navigational laws.
  • Presents professional level of customer service and appearance to all- Internal and external customers.
  • Complies with rules and regulations contained in the Crew Handbook and as directed by supervisor. Ensures that all maintenance personnel behave in a manner that furthers the mission of the principal organization. Maintains and manages a clear work schedule and ensures same is followed by all employees within the department.
  • Provides interface with industry representatives such that all maintenance issues are rapidly resolved.
  • Maintains compliance with licensing requirements regarding physical standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications:

LICENSES/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:
  • Ordinary Seaman
  • Chief or Assistant Engineer limited or unlimited (suitable equivalency accepted)
Professional Certification(s) or License:
  • VPDSD
  • Basic Firefighting
  • Medical certificate
  • TWIC
  • Rigging or crane training preferred
Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge or training in applying advanced theory, concepts, principles and practices of marine engineering, mechanical engineering, structural engineering and naval architecture principles and practices as they pertain to ocean-going ships.
  • Knowledge of regulatory body (BV, ABS, USCG, IMO HSC, USPHS, etc.) requirements for design, operation, maintenance, and repair of ocean-going ships.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Strong electronics and electrical training and understanding.
  • Possess and demonstrate superior mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, electronic, and other skills exercised in engineering management of a large motor vessel.
  • Utilize proven training and mentoring techniques.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate well-developed inter-personal skills..
  • Set and achieve high standards of performance.
  • Demonstrate initiative and be able to make progress on multiple assignments under time constraints.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems
