About the Opportunity
The Research Associate - Oceanographer will be a member of Theme 2: The Nature and Impacts of Southern Ocean Change - and will provide a key role in using observations to quantify regional variations in Southern Ocean carbon uptake and ocean acidification.
The Research Associate will have a significant team focus and will provide strong quantitative and analytical skills to the activities of the group. The position demands a productive and innovative researcher capable of initiating and driving independent research ideas as well as collaboratively supporting the work of others.

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $150,759 comprising base salary within the range of $110,992 to $128,854 plus 17% superannuation.

The position demands a productive and innovative researcher capable of initiating and driving independent research ideas as well as collaboratively supporting the work of others.
What you'll do:
- Make an effective and sustained contribution to the AAPP strategic objectives and at a wider level to the University and IMAS through research focused on driving the uptake of SWOT satellite data for oceanography in the southern side of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and deepen the understanding of dynamics and processes across and onto the Antarctic shelf.
- Prepare and participate in the RSV Nuyina cruise in the Antarctic Slope Current experiment in coordination with modelling efforts of the AAPP team to enhance the understanding of this transition zone dynamics and heat and carbon pathways
- Work with AAPP oceanographers and other national and international key collaborators to improve the understanding of fine scale processes through model outputs and validation and quantification of the value added by the Swath altimetry.
To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate:
- A PhD or equivalent in a relevant field of science or engineering; e.g., marine or environmental science, oceanography.
- A solid understanding of satellite altimetry and physical oceanography.
- A good record of, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved international recognition and made worthwhile contributions to the field of oceanography, demonstrated by a record of quality publications and presentations at international conferences.
- Experience in analysing large datasets like model outputs or heavy datasets and high performance computing.
