Job Description
Are you passionate about maritime technology and ready to take on the exciting challenge of optimizing vessel performance from a mechanical perspective? Join our team in Leidschendam, the Netherlands, as a Mechanical Project Engineer for our Fleet Development department.
In this role, you'll be at the forefront of overseeing and managing mechanical engineering projects related to our vessels and maritime systems. Your responsibilities include designing, planning, and coordinating the implementation of mechanical systems and components, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards. You'll immediately be involvement in vital projects, such as converting existing and new Geotechnical vessels to incorporate hybrid battery installations and methanol-driven combustion engines. This year, we kick off the conversion of a DP2 ship to methanol, with potential fleet expansion in the following year, requiring new vessels to undergo methanol conversion. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, precise management of project timelines and budgets, and proactive troubleshooting of mechanical issues during projects are integral to your responsibilities. Here for you have excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate. Effective communication is crucial for conveying technical information, managing project expectations, and troubleshooting mechanical issues.
Furthermore, you'll contribute to the integration of cutting-edge remote operating technology in crewed vessels. Your role includes enhancing the reliability of our diverse fleet, spanning Geophysical Research Vessels (typically DP0 or DP1 classed), Geotechnical Drilling Research vessels (DP2 classed), and Inspection vessels equipped with DP2 classification and ROVs for comprehensive inspection tasks.
This is an office-based position with minimal international travel, except for a few separate planned travels during project execution.

Your role
- You are responsible for the set-up, interfacing, testing, operation, repair and maintenance of vessels;
- You assist with the preparation and execution of new building projects, vessel conversions / modifications and other vessel related technical projects, and in management of the project team and third party contractors;
- You are involved in/responsible for all engineering-related aspects of the project and assists more senior colleagues with more complex assignments;
- You perform conceptual engineering and CAD sketching works as may be required to support the project, and establish functional requirements for modification works in close cooperation with the Project Manager and other departments within Fugro;
- You coordinate Mechanical engineering works carries out by third party contractors and assist with the evaluation of possible new and/or existing projects;
- You prepare work scope descriptions for engineering, fabrication, and installation activities for vessel modification projects.
- You have a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering, with at least 5 years+ focus on marine applications;
- You are proficient in designing, planning, and implementing mechanical systems and components for vessels;
- You have demonstrated ability to oversee and manage engineering projects from conception to completion. This includes effective coordination, timeline management, and budget adherence;
- You posses the capacity to contribute to innovative solutions and adapt to emerging technologies;
- You have excellent communication and reporting skills in English (verbal and written).
