An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Technical Engineer (Nuclear Watchkeeper) to join our Rolls-Royce Submarines Disposal and Defuel Joint Reactor Team based at
HM Naval Base Devonport.
You will be part of a team who identify and implement process optimisation opportunities throughout all phases of the Royal Navy PWR1 submarine decommissioning and defuel processes that are completed in Devonport. You will provide thought leadership to enable both programme acceleration and cost reductions to be realised. The role will primarily focus on decommissioning and preparation of submarine nuclear systems and defuel process operations but may extend into interfacing nuclear facilities and process support equipment as required.
A key aspect of this role involves working in a joint team with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Babcock to deliver collaborative solutions.

- Identify, assess, and implement opportunities to optimise the Submarine decommissioning and Defuel programme prior to the submarines entering the final disposal phase.
- Leverage engineering expertise to analyse tasks, processes, and system designs, to identify opportunities for improvement. Provide technical justifications for change. Ensuring alignment with industry standards, plant and equipment operational requirements, innovation and safety requirements
- Lead and manage optimisation projects, ensuring timely delivery, budget adherence, and alignment with technical and operational quality standards. Oversee resources and execution of approved initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, design, and operations teams across the Submarine Enterprise to ensure the effective execution of optimisation projects and seamless integration into broader operations.

The qualifications, skills and competencies required are:
- Qualified to a degree level in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related disciplines) or equivalent experience, or Category A or B Watchkeeper in a Nuclear Submarine environment.
- Have in depth knowledge of Submarine systems, including Nuclear Reactor Plants or Submarine Decommissioning or Nuclear Defuel operations. Experience in the Submarine Enterprise or related industries (e.g., Aerospace, Oil and Gas) is advantageous.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills along with the ability to proactively identify and implement improvement opportunities.
- Experience of working with cross-functional teams and engaging with external and internal stakeholders at all levels.
- Proficient in analysing data and making data-driven decisions.
- Experience in regulated environments, such as the Submarine Enterprise, Nuclear Industry, or other Defence-Related sectors is beneficial but not required.
