About us
The United Kingdom's national weather and climate service. People are at the heart of what we do.
We help prepare the world for tomorrow. From supercomputing to super people, our innovative approach to weather prediction and climate science is world-leading and world-changing. We’re a community of experts in our fields, in space, on the sea floor, in the atmosphere and always with our feet on the ground. What we do is life-changing, often life-saving and always life-enhancing.
Excellent people and culture are behind the exceptional, science, technology and operations at the Met Office. We have teams working across the world and around the clock in everything from, technology, engineering, weather, climate, communications, finance and beyond. Wherever we are and whatever our role, we all work together to help people make better decisions to stay safe and thrive.
Experts by nature
The people behind our organisation are globally recognised experts in their fields and often they or their teams are award winning. Whether that is receiving recognition under the UK Honours system for services to science or recognition by prestigious organisations across a wide range of disciplines.
Our experts are globally recognised for what they do and we even hold our own annual Awards for Excellence where we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ wide-ranging expertise and work. Find out more about this expertise by meeting some of our colleagues.
Our responsibility as an employer
We aim to be recognised as a responsible employer to both current and potential employees. We actively support the physical and emotional health of staff. We do this through a number of key areas:
- well-being and healthy living
- welfare
- flexibility
- health and safety
- diversity and equality
Well-being and healthy living
We have a sports and social club at our head office, as well as a health club with a wide range of fitness equipment, activities and classes. Furthermore, we offer a wide range of bikes for staff hire, and healthy eating choices in the staff restaurant. We also run a Cyclescheme and car share scheme to encourage environmentally friendly travel.
We recognise the need to look after our employees’ mental health too. There are around 30 Mental Health First Aiders spread across different parts of the office and available to support their colleagues.
Welfare
We have an Employee Assistance Programme that offers a 24/7 professional counselling service to staff members in times of need. We also have a dignity and respect at work team who can offer confidential support.
Flexibility
We give all members of staff the opportunity of flexibility within their role. From flexible working patterns, home working and compressed or staggered hours. We also offer options such as Childcare vouchers which can be used to pay any Ofsted (or equivalent) registered carer, including nurseries, childminders, nannies and play schemes.
Health and Safety
We are committed to the provision of safe and healthy working environments across the UK. This includes a range of Health and Safety policies and procedures and training for all.
Diversity and Equality, and employee feedback.
We value the visible and non-visible individual differences that people bring. Every year we carry out a People Survey that forms part of the Civil Service People Survey and enables comparisons between different organisations.
We recognise that we are all different and want each of us to feel valued for who we are and what we bring to our work. We continually assess and improve our ED&I policies, procedures and practices to create a culture that reflects this and results in a great place to work.
