Job Description:
Parsons has been a leader in the planning, design and delivery of transportation infrastructure across the world for more than 75 years. We are looking for an experienced terrestrial biologist with strong client relationships to add to our Infrastructure team in the Greater Toronto Region. You will have the flexibility to work from an office in Toronto, Markham, London, Toronto or Oakville and also from home. Our team is focused on helping our provincial and municipal clients expand and improve their transportation systems through innovative solutions to their tough planning and design challenges.
Parsons is seeking an Environmental Monitor and Fisheries Biologists for our team in Ontario to join the Environmental Services Group in Ontario. In this role the successful candidate be an integral part of the environmental group and will be involved in a wide range of projects across the province including fieldwork investigations and inventories, impact assessment studies and mitigation plans, during and post-construction monitoring of environmental project components, and preparation of technical reports and memos. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in the field as well as the office with flexible office work arrangements.

The Environmental Monitor/Fisheries Biologist's key responsibilities include:
- Conduct site inspections to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and permits.
- Monitor and document environmental conditions, such as water quality, wildlife, and vegetation.
- Coordinate with construction teams to implement environmental mitigation measures and corrective actions as needed.
- Participate in field work using industry standard protocols with support from experienced staff, including inventory and assessment of aquatic habitat, fish community inventories, freshwater mussel surveys, benthic macroinvertebrates and water quality sampling
- Conduct Species at Risk habitat assessments and species-specific surveys
- Prepare regulatory approval permit applications
- Enter, compile, and analyze field data
- Prepare reporting documents suitable to satisfy Client expectations and Regulatory reporting requirements
- Apply for scientific collection permits from MNRF
- Assist with fish relocations (i.e., "fish salvage") and mussel salvage and relocations
- 3+ years of experience in a related role
- Experience providing ecological consulting services for public and private sector clients
- Post-secondary education in environmental science, biology/ecology, or related field
- Experience in the collection, analysis, and reporting of field data following established protocols
- Experience in the accurate identification of Ontario freshwater fish and mussel species.
- Completion of Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) Freshwater Fish Identification considered an asset
- MTO RAQS Certification (Fisheries Assessment Specialist, Fisheries Compliance During Contracts) considered an asset or the ability to obtain RAQS certification.
- Experience with obtaining permits and approvals under the Endangered Species Act, Species at Risk Act, Fisheries Act, and Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act
- Training in erosion and sediment control such as CISEC or CPESC is considered an asset
- Strong knowledge of Aquatic Species at Risk found in Ontario, including identification, habitat, and life-history.
- Experience in completing Impact Assessment following municipal, provincial or federal policies or acts.
- Maintaining and organizing accurate and detailed fieldnotes as well as photo documentation records.
- Proficiency in the use of ArcGIS Software.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills particularly technical report writing.
