
Marine Engineering Skills Instructor (HEO; Permanent)
Location: BIM National Fisheries College, Castletownbere, Co. Cork, Republic of Ireland
Contract: Full-time; Contract of indefinite Duration (Subject to a 6 month probationary period)
Grade: Higher Executive Officer (HEO)
Salary scale: €58,847 to €74,112 per annum pro-rated with time worked. (Appointment will be at the first point of the pay scaleunless the candidate is currently employed within the public services in the Republic of Ireland).
About BIM
BIM is a non-commercial semi-state body in the Republic of Ireland, formally established by statute (Irish Sea Fisheries Act 1952) and an agency of the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine (DAFM). It is the Irish State agency responsible for developing the Irish seafood industry. BIM’s strategy aims to enhance the competitiveness of the Irish seafood sector focusing on the following five key strategic priorities: Sustainability, Skills, Innovation, Competitiveness, Leadership.
The organisation has four business units: Seafood Technical Services, Corporate Services, Development and Innovation Services, Economic and Strategic Services, and these are supported by the Office of the CEO. BIM’s Head Office is in Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin, Republic of Ireland.
In supporting the seafood sector, BIM’s staff are also strategically located in the coastal communities which they serve, including offices in Galway and Killybegs. In addition, BIM’s two National Fisheries Colleges are located in Greencastle, Co. Donegal and Castletownbere, Co. Cork.
Brief description of Role
This is a permanent full-time post based in BIM’s National Fisheries College Ireland (NFCI) Castletownbere, Co. Cork providing training, examination, and assessment for maritime training to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) recognised by the Department of Transport.
The Key responsibilities of this role are:-
Develop materials, deliver training and carry out learner assessment for fishing industry related training including the following courses:
- Marine Engineering Processes and Operations
- First Aid Responder (FAR)
- STCW Medical Care Aboard Ship
- STCW 3- & 5-Day Marine Fire Fighting
- STCW Medical First Aid
- BIM Basic Safety Training
- QQI courses for Fishing Vessel Trainees
- Enhanced Safety Training EST
Deliver or assist in the delivery and assessment of Fishing Industry Safety Training including:
- Marine Engineering Processes
- First Aid Responder (FAR)
- STCW Medical Care Aboard Ship
- STCW 3- & 5-Day Marine Fire Fighting
- STCW Medical First Aid
- BIM Basic Safety Training
- QQI courses for Fishing Vessel Trainees
- Enhanced Safety Training EST
Other duties include:-
- Keep up to date with training developments and industry standards
- Contribute to a shared view of training material and knowledge
- Preparation of training equipment
- Encourage the use of CANVAS as a blended learning tool
- Comply with the requirements of the Quality Management System: ISO 9001
- Follow BIM’s quality assurance procedures and any QA requirements of external awarding bodies: QQI and the Department of Transport
- To perform any other related duties as might reasonably be required and which may be assigned from time to time.
