Senior Marine Scientist - Oceans and Environmental Team

Location: Melbourne, VIC

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Marine Scientist to join our Oceans and Environmental team based in Melbourne. This role is ideal for a technically strong marine or coastal professional who enjoys combining scientific insight with practical project delivery.

Working across multidisciplinary teams nationally, you will lead the delivery of marine environmental, coastal engineering and ocean science projects, applying your expertise to support clients in government, industry and the private sector.

What you will be involved in
  • You will take a leading role in the planning and delivery of a variety of technically and environmentally focused projects, including:
  • Offshore renewable energy developments
  • Port development and dredging impact studies and management plans
  • Wastewater discharge studies
  • Marine mammal, fish, benthic and seabird surveys
  • Environmental impact and risk assessments
Project approvals, such as assessments under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act) and Victorian Environment Effects Act (EE Act), management plans for the Offshore Infrastructure Regulator (OIR) and NOPSEMA and Victorian Marine and Coastal Act consent applications
  • Water quality and sediment transport studies
  • Marine fieldwork planning and supervision (including vessel-based work, diving and surveys)
  • Oil spill risk assessments and coastal process studies
  • Development and delivery of environmental monitoring programs
  • Preparation and review of high-quality technical reports and proposals
  • Project management of small to medium-scale projects, including scheduling, budgeting, quality control and client liaison
  • Collaborating with RPS and Tetra Tech specialists across disciplines including marine ecology, coastal engineering health and safety and communications
As a Senior Consultant, you will also provide technical leadership, mentoring and oversight to junior and early-career team members, and contribute to the continuous improvement of project delivery and safety standards.

About you

You are a technically capable and commercially minded marine scientist with a passion for delivering high-quality work and collaborating across disciplines. You will have:
  • A degree (and ideally postgraduate qualifications) in a relevant engineering or marine science, environmental science, oceanography, marine ecology or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years' relevant professional experience in marine environmental science or coastal engineering
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering environmental assessments, monitoring programs or modelling studies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare technical reports and engage effectively with clients and regulators
  • Proven project management experience, including financial management and risk control
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality and environmental excellence in all aspects of work
  • Experience with modelling, GIS, Matlab or Python (advantageous)
  • Eligibility for, or membership with, a relevant professional body
