About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Marine Surveyor to join our Perth team in providing technical advice on marine losses; ideally you will have strong capability and expertise in hull and pleasurecraft lines.

Whilst this role would suit someone who has a marine surveying/insurance background, we are open to hearing from you have worked in a service-related role, or have recently graduated university, or have worked in a similar field where you can apply your transferrable skills to managing claims from start to finish.

About You

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct office and field-based assessment and investigation of marine and transportation, and liability, insurance losses from the first advice to final settlement as required.
  • Provide support and advice to policyholders concerning their claims.
  • Examine claim forms, policies and endorsements, client instructions, transport documents and carriage contracts to determine coverage where instructed.
  • Investigate claims by inspecting physical damage, interviewing cargo owners, transport and/or warehouse operators, obtaining official reports where required, and comparing claim information with survey and assessment outcomes.
  • Set, maintain and control accurate claim reserves and handling costs.
  • Prepare reports to a consistently high standard, summarising information received by relevant parties during the course of the investigations.
  • Accurate adjustment of cargo losses and/or proper determination of carrier's liability in line with Service Level Agreements and Crawford Marine & Transportation Unit Report Writing Guidelines.
  • Settle claims according to client instructions and in line with authority levels, issue settlement recommendations, and dispose of salvage when appropriate.
Key Requirements

  • Professional qualifications applicable to the Marine Insurance and/or Marine Surveying industry and if not a willingness to attain.
  • Some experience in Marine and/or an insurance claims related role would be preferable
  • A general understanding of the documentation required to substantiate a claim
  • A basic knowledge of marine and transport terminology
  • Some understanding of business accounting procedures
  • Some understanding of cargo handling operations (packaging, loading, stowage, securing and unloading) would be desirable.
  • An acquaintance with the concept of Incoterms® a distinct advantage
  • A basic understanding of the application of time bars and liability limits/regimes for the corresponding claims.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft and Email Applications.
